Fence Types

Every fence type. One crew. One price.

We install all major fence types across the Portland metro — and we'll help you choose the right one for your property, budget, and neighborhood conditions.

Cedar & Wood

The most popular choice in the Portland metro. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and handles Oregon's wet climate better than most wood species. Dog-ear, flat-top, lattice-top, and custom profiles available. Can be stained or painted to match your home.

Vinyl

Zero maintenance — never paint, stain, or seal. Vinyl holds its color and shape through Oregon winters without rotting, warping, or splintering. More expensive upfront than cedar but significantly less expensive over a 10–15 year horizon. Excellent for HOA communities.

Chain-Link

The most cost-effective security fencing available. Galvanized steel or vinyl-coated in black, green, or brown. Ideal for large yards, dog runs, commercial properties, and any application where visibility is acceptable. Long service life with minimal maintenance.

Ornamental Iron

Classic wrought-iron style in powder-coated aluminum or steel. Adds architectural character to front yards, driveways, and formal gardens. Extremely long-lasting when properly installed. Available in multiple heights and panel styles — flat-top, spear-top, and custom designs.

Composite

The premium long-term option — wood-look appearance with the durability of engineered materials. Resists rot, insects, and moisture without painting or staining. Especially recommended for shaded north-facing yards, river-adjacent properties, and any location where wood degrades faster than average.

Low-maintenance Rot-resistant Wood-look 30+ year life

Farm & Ranch Rail

Classic split-rail and board-on-board styles for rural properties, acreage, and large lots in communities like Canby, Sandy, Estacada, and Newberg. Priced by the linear foot with accurate take-offs. Post spacing and depth adjusted for uneven terrain and rocky soil conditions.

Our Process

How a fence project works with OJB.

From first call to finished fence — here's exactly what to expect.

01

Free on-site estimate

We come to your property, walk the fence line, measure from the actual property line, assess soil and drainage conditions, and discuss your goals. Same-day or next-day in most areas.

02

Written price — locked

You get a written estimate that breaks down materials, post count, gates, labor, and permit fees if applicable. The number doesn't change after you approve it. No open-ended contracts.

03

Permit & scheduling

If your project requires a permit, we pull it before we start. We coordinate with your city or county, schedule the work, and confirm arrival time. Most projects start within 1–2 weeks of estimate approval.

04

Install & clean up

Our crew handles the full install — post setting, panels, gates, and finishing. We haul off the old fence if removal is included. Jobsite is clean when we leave. We walk the finished fence with you before we go.

Why OJB for Fencing

Built on trust. Set in concrete.

01

We measure from the actual property line

We don't estimate property line location by eye. We start from your survey markers or county records. On compact lots — Milwaukie, Tigard, Portland — a fence that's inches off creates real problems with neighbors. We get it right before the first post goes in the ground.

Boundary-precise installs
02

Posts set for your soil — not a generic spec

Clay soil in Aloha, rocky volcanic soil near Sandy, low-lying drainage areas in Tualatin, sandy river soil near the Clackamas — each requires different footing depth and post material. We assess soil and drainage at every estimate and set posts that stay put for the life of the fence.

Soil-appropriate footings
03

Written price — the number doesn't change

We walk the full fence line before quoting. Linear footage, post count, gate locations, terrain changes, and permit fees are all included in the written price. What we quote is what you pay — no surprise additions once we've broken ground.

FAQ

Common fencing questions.

It depends on your city and the fence height. Most Portland metro jurisdictions require permits for fences over 6 feet in residential zones. Some cities — including Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro — have additional rules for front-yard fences and corner lots. We determine permit requirements at the estimate and handle all applications and coordination. You don't need to contact the permit office yourself.

We price by the linear foot with a full itemized breakdown — materials, post count, gates, labor, and permit fees listed separately. This way you can see exactly what you're paying for and make informed decisions about scope. For large rural properties with 200+ foot runs, we walk the full perimeter before quoting to account for terrain changes, drainage issues, and gate placements.

It depends on your location and priorities. Cedar is the most popular — naturally rot-resistant and handles Oregon moisture well. Vinyl is the zero-maintenance choice with a longer lifespan but higher upfront cost. Composite is the premium option for shaded or moisture-heavy locations like Lake Oswego, Gladstone, and properties near rivers. We'll make a specific recommendation at the estimate based on your yard's sun exposure, drainage, and soil conditions.

Yes — old fence removal and haul-off can be included in your estimate. We remove the existing fence, pull posts, and dispose of all materials before installing the new fence. The cost is included in your written estimate upfront so there are no surprises.

Sloped lots are very common in the Portland metro — West Linn, Gladstone, Bull Mountain in Tigard, and many Portland neighborhoods all have significant grade changes. We handle sloped installs using either a stepped method (fence panels drop in increments to follow the slope) or a raked method (panels follow the grade continuously). We discuss both options at the estimate and recommend the approach that looks best for your specific grade and fence style.

We use existing survey markers where visible, and reference county parcel records for properties where markers aren't clear. If there's genuine uncertainty about the line — particularly on older lots where markers may be buried or missing — we'll discuss your options at the estimate. In some cases a licensed surveyor visit is worth the investment before installing a permanent fence, especially on shared-fence situations with neighbors.

Yes — single walk gates, double drive-through gates, and arched or custom gates are all available in every fence material we carry. Gate hardware, hinges, and latches are included in the gate pricing. We account for gate swing clearance and latch height at the estimate so everything functions correctly from day one.

Yes. Our Oregon CCB license (#255649) covers all construction work throughout Oregon including fencing. We also hold a Washington contractor license (#OREGOJB755C8). We carry full general liability and workers' compensation insurance on every job and can provide proof of coverage before any work begins.
