Keep the Structure. Replace the Surface.

What is deck resurfacing?

Deck resurfacing replaces the visible walking surface while retaining structural framing that is suitable to remain. It can be a strong option when the deck boards are worn, splintered, faded, or outdated, but the underlying structure is still serviceable.

01

Old boards come off

Existing deck boards are removed so the underlying joists, blocking, connections, and structural conditions can be evaluated.

02

Framing is evaluated

The exposed structure is reviewed for rot, deterioration, movement, damaged framing, improper spacing, and other conditions that may affect the resurfacing project.

03

New decking goes on

Once the approved preparation and repairs are complete, new wood or composite decking is installed according to the selected product requirements.

Is Your Deck a Candidate?

Resurfacing works best when the structure is still worth keeping.

A deck can look worn on top while still having useful structural life underneath. In other cases, removing the old decking exposes deterioration that makes a larger rebuild more appropriate.

We evaluate the existing deck before recommending resurfacing so you are not simply putting expensive new decking over framing that should have been replaced.

Good resurfacing candidates may have

  • ✓ Structurally suitable joists and beams
  • ✓ Serviceable posts and footings
  • ✓ Limited framing deterioration
  • ✓ A layout the homeowner wants to keep
  • ✓ Framing compatible with the new decking
  • ✓ Mostly surface-level wear and aging

When Resurfacing Is Not Enough

Some decks need more than new boards.

Resurfacing only makes sense if the structure underneath the decking is appropriate to remain.

01

Significant framing rot

Extensive deterioration in joists, beams, posts, or other structural members can make full replacement a better investment.

02

Failing ledger or connections

Serious problems where an attached deck connects to the home can require structural work beyond a normal resurfacing scope.

03

Major layout changes

If you want to substantially enlarge, reconfigure, raise, lower, or redesign the deck, a full rebuild may be more practical.

04

Poor footing conditions

Settlement, movement, inadequate support, or damaged post bases can indicate larger structural issues.

05

Framing is incompatible

Some decking products and layouts require different framing spacing, blocking, or support than the existing deck provides.

06

Too much repair is required

If resurfacing requires replacement of a large portion of the structure, a full deck replacement may provide better long-term value.

Decking Options

Upgrade the look and maintenance level of your deck.

Resurfacing is often an opportunity to move from an older wood surface to a newer material without automatically rebuilding the entire deck.

Low Maintenance

Composite Decking

Composite decking such as Trex, TimberTech, and other approved systems can reduce ongoing staining and sealing while providing a consistent finished appearance.

Natural Wood

Cedar Decking

Cedar provides a warm natural appearance and can be a strong choice for homeowners who prefer real wood and are comfortable with periodic maintenance.

Traditional Option

Pressure-Treated Decking

Pressure-treated wood offers a more traditional surface and lower initial material cost than many composite systems.

What Happens Under the Decking

The existing frame still matters.

Resurfacing is not simply removing old boards and covering whatever is underneath them.

Once the existing surface is removed, the exposed framing may need preparation, blocking, localized repairs, joist protection, or other approved modifications before the new decking can be installed.

Framing review can include

  • ✓ Joist condition
  • ✓ Joist spacing
  • ✓ Blocking
  • ✓ Fastener condition
  • ✓ Ledger conditions
  • ✓ Beam and post condition
  • ✓ Moisture exposure
  • ✓ Compatibility with selected decking

Complete the Update

Railings, stairs and finish details.

Resurfacing can be limited to the deck surface, or it can be combined with other approved upgrades depending on the condition of the deck and the look you want.

01

New Railings

Wood, composite, and aluminum railing systems can be incorporated into the resurfacing project when included in the scope.

02

Stair Updates

Worn stair treads, railing, or stair components can be evaluated and included where replacement or modification is appropriate.

03

Picture Framing

Border details and picture-framed layouts can create a more finished appearance, especially with composite decking.

Clear Project Scope

What affects deck resurfacing cost?

Resurfacing cost depends on the existing deck, the material selected, and how much preparation or repair is required after the old surface is removed.

01

Deck Size

Square footage, board layout, stairs, borders, and deck geometry all affect material and labor requirements.

02

Material Selection

Composite, cedar, pressure-treated wood, railing systems, and finish details can create very different project scopes.

03

Framing Condition

Localized framing repairs, blocking, preparation, joist protection, or structural corrections can affect the final scope.

We provide a written estimate describing the approved scope before construction begins. If removing the existing decking reveals concealed conditions requiring work outside that scope, the additional work is discussed and documented before proceeding.
